This course will provide an overview of general purpose statistical modelling and its implementation in R using a range of examples including some from the medical/public health area.
Objectives:
Provide a brief review of what statistical modelling involves, what can (and can't be) expected from it, and what toolbox of inferential approaches it has to draw upon (including use of likelihood, Bayesian/Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods, and resampling ideas).
Programme:
Describe in outline some examples of Linear, Generalised Linear models and Generalised Linear Mixed Models - the most widely used classes of parametric statistical models (including both traditional likelihood-based and Bayesian approaches to fitting and assessing such models).
Describe in outline some examples of non-parametric modelling (and associated approaches to fitting and assessing such models).
Throughout the course available software to implement the various modelling methods will be illustrated (including a short introduction to the use of R and to the use of WinBUGS (for Bayesian modelling) and also to links between R and WinBUGS. | | Schedule | 9:30am to 12:30am and 2:00om to 5:00pm | | Tuition Fee | 350€ | | ECTS | Information not available | | Start date | 2010-05-31 | End date | 2010-06-02 | |

The Geographical Information Systems – GIS provide a broad set of techniques to analyze socioeconomic, environmental and health data within a spatial context, improving analytical capabilities.
By identifying where the events are occurring, what is the population affected and how close the events are, one can suggest hypothesis for further investigation. GIS became a widely used tool to monitor and analyze the occurrence of events.
Target Public: this course is designed to give the basic knowledge to all those who want to learn how to use GIS to analyse socioeconomic, environmental and health data.
The students will attend lectures and training sessions, where using GIS software’s and databases they will learn how to construct indicators, develop some spatial analysis and prepare maps layouts.

| Tutor: Fernando G. Benavides (Pompeu Fabra University, Barcelona – Spain) | Responsible Fernando G. Benavides (Pompeu Fabra University, Barcelona – Spain) Scientific programme Occupational health, as part of public health, has the goal to promote and protect the workers' health. Work is one of the basic determinants of health. Occupation has a profound influence, both negative (injury, illness) and positive (welfare, social identity), on health. At the same time, health bears directly on the work, and its impact can be either positive (productivity) or negative (absences due to disability).
The course “Introduction to Occupational Health” represents a unique opportunity to learn and/or refresh fundamental concepts regarding the main health problems affecting employees from a public health perspective. This course has five sessions (two hours each) and addresses: 1) Welfare state and occupational health; 2) Precarious employment and health; 3) Evaluation of interventions aimed at prevention of occupational injuries; 4) Recording and notification of occupational diseases; 5) Evaluation of sickness absence management policies. The number of participants is limited to 50 participants.

methods (such as Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) techniques and variants of
that. The focus will be very much on practical implementation of the methods
using the statistical programming language R and related packages (including
links between R and OpenBUGS).
The course is arranged into sessions:
·
Introduction to Bayesian Modelling and MCMC
Review of the Bayesian
Approach, MCMC and Hastings-Metropolis algorithm, model checking and
inferential ideas.
·
Common Applications of Bayesian Modelling
Examples of implementing a
range of standard models using R and links between R and OpenBUGS, including
Linear and Generalised Linear Mixed models, survival models, temporal and
spatio-temporal models, Generalised Additive models.
·
Practical Workshop
An opportunity for groups
of participants to work through modelling examples and associated computer
implementation for themselves
·

A brief discussion of more
advanced techniques, including
Reversible Jump (RJMCMC), and Approximate Bayesian Computation (ABC)
The course is appropriate for those involved in
statistical analysis in application areas such as epidemiology, public health,

| Tutor: Milton Severo | Enquadramento e
objectivos:
